The waters listed here are a collection of lakes
and rivers frequented by members of the Manitoba Fly Fishers
Association. **Note that species may have changed on some of these
lakes. Refer to
Provincial Regulations for lake specific regulations (special
limits, boat restrictions, etc.)
East/South-Eastern Manitoba
Bear Lake
- Rainbow Trout. Back country walk in lake. Reached by 3-km. long
trail, which starts at HWY 44 east of Rennie. Look for the sign at
trailhead.
Camp Lake
- Rainbow Trout. Walk in lake, 1 1/2 km trail starts at Lyons Lake
parking lot. Consistent producer for many years.
Hunt Lake
- Brook Trout. Road access. Small lake, ideal for belly boating,
located south of Westhawk Lake.
McHugh Lake
- Brown Trout. Hike in lake located 3/4 km south of HWY.1. Turn west
immediately after the underpass of the Westhawk Lake cloverleaf to
parking area. Follow the ski trail to reach the lake. Or, to shorten
the hike, take first turn south 200 yards east of West Hawk circle
to parking facility in a gravel pit. Not recommended for vehicles
with low road clearance. McHugh browns live up to the species
reputation for being hard to catch. Key to success is patience and
perseverance.
NOTE: Artificial lures only regulation applies on
McHugh.
Lyons Lake
- Rainbow Trout. South of HWY. 1.1 km west of Ontario border. Large
parking lot, toilet facilities, and picnic tables make it a good
lake for a family outing.

- Lake Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Whitefish,
Pike. Backcountry lake in Whiteshell Provincial Park. Accessed by
crossing the Winnipeg River from Eight-Foot Falls Campground south
of Pointe du Bois then by long trail (1/2 hr. hike) to George Lake.
Engaging the services of an outfitter to handle travel arrangements
is recommended.
Horseshoe
Lake – Smallmouth Bass, Pike. Backcountry
lake in Whiteshell Provincial Park. Getting to the lake can be a bit
of a challenge, but the excellent smallmouth bass fishing makes the
effort worthwhile. Drive east on Provincial Road 309 turn north on
gravel road just before the Lone Island Lake turn-off. Drive to
parking area, 1 1/2-km portage to Meditation Lake, boat across
heading north/east to 1/4-km portage which takes you into Horseshoe.

advisable that people making the trip should be properly equipped
and have some backwoods camping experience.)

family hiking and moving water fly fishing opportunity. Fish
hatchery is on opposite side of river. Tours of hatchery are
available.Winnipeg/North through Winnipeg
Assiniboine
River -
Walleye, Sauger, Goldeye, Catfish, Drum, etc. Favorite access point
is at Beaudry Park.
Red River - Catfish,
Carp, Silver Bass, Walleye, Sauger, Goldeye, White Bass, and the
occasional Northern Pike. The Red is a world class catfish fishery,
and big channel
cats are highly prized by MFFA fly fishers. Use big woolly buggers
or streamers on a sink tip - you will lose some flies on the bottom,
though usually you can pull free. An 8 or 9 weight rod with a
fighting butt is recommended - cats around three feet in length/20
lbs in weight are not unusual, and these fish don't come willingly
to the net. There are some huge carp here too, though not often
fair-hooked on the fly. Best area to fly fish is on the east shore,
below the bridge at Lockport (low water years) or at the floodway
outflow (high water years). Be mindful of how far you wade as water
levels below the dam can change fairly quickly.
