Fly Patterns

Manitoba winters tend to be a bit long, which leaves lots of time for MFFA members to hone their tying skills. Of course, a lot of us still wait until the last possible moment to pull out the vise and get to work.

If you would like to share a favorite pattern, please contact us at mffa@mffa.org

Kiwi Muddler, tied by Gerry Beck during one of the advanced classes. This is a very effective minnow pattern.

Turks Tarantula, tied by Gerry Beck during one of the advanced classes.

Nunavut Laker, tied by Gerry Beck during one of the advanced classes.

Flashabou Nymph Image
Flashabou Nymph  "One of my favorite searching flies for ponds and streams.  Fish the Flashabou Nymph on a short leader with a sink-tip line or floating line depending on the water depth.  Watch very alertly for takes since most fish do not hit nymphs hard - they don't need to.

Glo-bug Gomphus.jpg (97287 bytes) Glow-Bug Gomphus This fly represents the large flattened dragonfly nymphs in the genera Gomphus (large brown nymphs found in flowing waters) and Libellula (large olive nymphs found in slow-water streams, lakes and ponds)

Olive Bead Head Woolly Bugger.jpg (108247 bytes) Olive Bead-Headed Woolly Bugger  has been my most fruitful trout provider no matter where I fished. It's great for rainbows in Barbie Lake.

                                  -- Pat Sloan

Rich Bitch This fly is made in the same manner as the 'Rocky' with the exception of black mink is used

C-Thru Minnow This pattern was designed to take advantage of the translucent nature of the mylar tubing available today.

Foxy Charlie This fly is used for fishing in fast waters such as the Manigotagan River, where the added weight of the bead chain eyes is needed to get the fly down quickly.

McHugh Minnow McHugh Lake...Brownies in clear water. A definite challenge. Anyone who has fished McHugh knows that it does not give up trout easily

Rocky This is an excellent spring trout fly.

Cut Wind Hun Dun.jpg (31383 bytes) Cut-wing Hun Dun This dry fly style is effectively fished for goldeye in Manitoba.

                                  -- Don Young

Voljc-Moser Dru Caddis.jpg (77771 bytes) Voljc-Moser Dry Caddis This caddis combines the shaggy deer-hair body of flies tied by Roman Moser with the realistic feather and mesh wings of Dr. Bodizar Voljc.
                                  -- Don Young

Daddy Long Legs.jpg (115329 bytes) Daddy Long Legs The silhouette of this fly probably gives the impression of a large easy meal. I usually fish this pattern static on a floating line.

                                  -- Frank Reynolds

Beach Sandal Popper.jpg (156943 bytes) Beach Sandal Popper When correctly retrieved, this popper produces a soft pop that smallmouth bass can not resist.
                                 -- Steve Abraham
